The legendary Joni Mitchell has been done by a bunch of famouses. And didn’t even mind!
How scary would it be to take on a song by the legendarily ferocious Joni Mitchell? Knowing that she was going to hear it and have an opinion and no doubt tear you a new arsehole should you ever run into her? Well, it was not so scary that these A-listers shyed away from giving it a bash.
It’s been years in the making but at last *breathes* the Joni Mitchell tribute album is ready and – what do you know? – it’s actually pretty fierce. Prince does the most genius falsetto version of Blue’s ‘Case of You’ (shivery!), Bjork does ‘Boho Dance’, kd lang tackles very respectably ‘Help Me’ while Annie Lennox does a surprisingly Eurythmics-like versh of ‘Ladies of the Canyon’. The album, called intriguingly ‘A Tribute to Joni Mitchell’, is released late in April.
Equally exciting is the news that Joni – despite having said she’d never record again (oh, they all say that) – is ready to release, in a couple of months, a brand new studio album! Hear all about it (and actually hear bits of it) on a new Radio 2 documentary by Amanda Ghost (don’t hold James Blunt’s ‘Beautiful’ against her). The first went out last night and can be reheard here. The next one is Tuesday next week.
