How do you make a big old hole in the ground, you know, glammy? Do this to it, that’s what.
Take one Wonder of the Natural World as seen on a Guardian sticker sometime recently, add a bit of business and what have you got? Eco vandalism or the fabbiest tourist attraction Arizona has ever seen (however hard that would be to pull off!)
Just a short hop by helicopter from Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon is, you know, quite big. So big in fact that it can seem a bit too big for your actual eyes to take in. It just seems like you’re out somewhere big. Bigger than Brent Cross even.
Now, those clever Arizonians have come up with the idea of putting a Skywalk (like the bloke in Star Wars) that juts out 4,000 feet over the canyon floor. It’ got a glass floor, just in case you weren’t feeling terrified enough, and has been three years in the making. Cleverly, the Skywalk people got Buzz Aldrin – one of the first men to walk on the moon (you see where this is going, don’t you?) – to take the first (giant) step (for mankind). He – or someone very good in his press office – called it ‘a magnificent first walk’.
Here’s what it looks like with a bunch of tourists on it…
