Oh, those Russians

Peter Tatchell (and Right Said Fred) go to Moscow Pride… for a beating!

Nice moustache

The Russians prove they have a very long way to go to catch up with the West (and not only in terms of denim and make-up) when they treated protesters at Moscow Pride to a queerbashing while the police looked on…

Gay rights icon Peter Tatchell had been asked to go to Moscow Pride by organisers who wanted some international observers to take a look at how the police not only allowed extreme right-wing loonies (swastikas, the whole nine yards) to mix in with the gay protesters but refused to arrest them when they turned nasty, preferring to take the gays into custody instead.

Peter also reckons that once in police custody himself – having been punched to the ground and roundly kicked while down – Russian fuzz asked him if he was a “sexual minority” and when he said he was told him they were going to “have a little fun” with him back at the station. And we don’t think they were talking a rousing game of Kerplunk.

An Orthodox Russian priest was even seen legging it over to get a couple of punches in (it’s what Jesus would have wanted, isn’t it, hat boy?) Mr. T is now calling on the British Embassy to put in a complaint to Russian authorities. Turning out to be nice people, these Ruskies, aren’t they?

  1. Nice to know they’re coming over here – prejudices still intact – in their droves. Exciting, isn’t it?

  3. Poor Peter and poor Richard from RSF. It’s a good job it wasn’t Poland. They’d have been hanging from lamp-posts by now. Such cruel people and such horrible shoes.

  4. Not sure how I feel about the tone of this story. It’s actually quite serious to be beaten up by right-wing extremists and then taken into custody. I don’t think a title referencing a Boney M song is altogether appropriate.

  5. It wasn’t Moscow Pride anyway, it was a demo to demand the right to hold Moscow Pride, which has been banned. Maybe if they could sign up Sinitta and Hazell Dean to perform there’d be less aggro. Oops, sorry, Michael. Was that too flippant?
