They both got punched out in Moscow, but what does Richard ‘Right Said Fred’ really think about Tatchell?

‘I never had any time for the Peter Tatchell/Outrage thing…’

Poor Richard!

Poor old Richard Fairbrass may have stood shoulder-to-shoulder against the evil right-wing Ruskies and the shameful police as they protested in Moscow in favour of a Gay Pride March this summer (their dodgy Mayor is all against it… meaning our lovely Mayor gave him what for in a letter). But back to the story in hand… When we spoke to Richard before Moscow, this is what he said…

‘I never had any time for the Peter Tatchell/Outrage thing,’ quoth he. ‘I think this outing of people is really bad.’ (It’s what Peter’s got himself a bit of a name for round these parts). ‘I admire what he does but the whole thing he does of “I know so-and-so is gay so I’m going to out them”… Even politicians.

‘It becomes a witch-hunt. Plus you don’t know all the circumstances. Maybe George Michael had a very Orthodox Greek family who didn’t agree with it. With Will Young, maybe his mother was having problems with it. You can’t tell people how they should behave. I think we should always be patient and a little forgiving.’

They actually seem rather strange cellmates, don’t they?

  1. Strange cellmates, indeedy. But Peter is rather a hero – don’t know many gays who would go the extents he does, for very little reward. He does all of this for very good and proper reasons.

  2. Peter Tatchell has balls of steel. I don’t agree with everything he believes in, but admire him a lot. Can’t really knock Fairbrass, either … he must have known going to Moscow meant he was risking his safety.
