Here he is looking all dashing and Rufus Wainwright…
And here are the questions – ecstasy, infidelity, ringtones – you thought fit to ask him…
If you could be an interviewer and interview Darren Hayes, what would you ask? Maaike
The type of question I love are those where they say, ‘Tell me something about you that is a contradiction of your persona’ I would say that I am painfully shy. I have a reputation for being boisterous on stage but I’m really quite shy and have very few people that I hang out with. I’ve never really loved clubs. I went to them in the 90s because I was desperately lonely and wanted to meet other gay men. I was always a big pop fan so if I’d lived in London, I would have probably gone to Popstarz but the clubs I knew were hardcore ecstasy-taking clubs.
Did you and Richard do anything nice to celebrate your anniversary? Dawn
Oooh, that’s very private. The only thing I will say is that we did watch The Empire Strikes Back on DVD. And that it was lovely.
‘Ello Darren, you big cutie! What ringtone do you have? Kenshin
Just old-school ring-ring. I fucking hate ringtones. I just want my phone to ring and text. I don’t want a camera, I don’t want internet, I don’t want music, I don’t want GPS (like SatNav)… I just want to call.
Do you and your fella have a ‘list’? You know, people you are allowed to shag. Or are you allowed to shag anyone you want anyhow? It’s very modern, you know. Lucifer
No, there’s no list in this house. We’re not even allowed to say if we think someone else is good-looking. I am if I wanted to but I hate it if he says someone else is cute. He once said that Mike Skinner was cute, right at the beginning of our relationship and I said, ‘You know what, I don’t need to know that. You can think it, but I absolutely don’t need to know it.’
What’s your favourite part of your body? Puppet on a String
Let me have a look. I’m not really that into myself. I like my hairy chest.
If I was ever so lucky as to bump into you face to face, what reaction could I expect if I was to say ‘hi’? What are the rules when meeting Darren Hayes? Would you hate to be disturbed or would it be OK to maybe ask for a pic? Anandi
First of all, I would be shocked that you would recognise me because I live and breathe in London and no one ever stops me. I think the rule for celebrities is that if you’re in a public space then you’re fair game. Just don’t come to my house. Ever!
You have an elegant white suit I love so much so who is author and what’s collection? Do you have something from the new Versace and D&G collection? Julian
I don’t wear D&G because I have to pay for it. None of it is free. That suit is cheap as chips. It’s by Cos, a high-street store and I only bought it because I did a photo shoot for the album where I’m under water and I wanted to be wearing white. It was such a great cut. We bought about three of them and I’ve been wearing them in America. At the moment I tend to wear a lot of Jil Sander and Marc Jacobs.
The new single ‘On the Verge of Something Wonderful’ is out on 6th August. The album, This Delicate Thing We’ve Made is released on 20th August.
