She may be rocking as the new Mitchell cousin (from an endless supply) in EastEnders but it seems to us that Sammy J may not have wanted to end up behind the bar of the Queen Vic. It was something she said when we talked to her last year – when she was just about to star in Guys ‘n’ Dolls opposite Patrick Swayze.
It goes something like this…
And what does the future hold for you?
I have so found a place that I am happy in [by which she means West End stage]. For me this was like a lifeline. I was getting really bored with the telly and just feeling really dissatisfied. There’s good stuff out there but it certainly wasn’t coming my way and I’d just got to the point where I didn’t want to do anymore crap. I can’t keep doing it. I was thinking about starting up some kind of business because it just wasn’t doing it for me. You get sucked into crap TV… crappy lightweight drama that doesn’t mean very much. There’s no character, no time to rehearse and it just gets to you thinking ‘God, I can’t do this anymore.’ And then this [Guys ‘n’ Dolls] came along and pople really care about it. I’d like to do more theatre because it’s been a real eye-opener.
Enjoy your time in EastEnders, Samantha (who we love, by the way: she was very funny on the subject of that name!)
