‘Amy’s like Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf’ reckons Sir Andrew Lloyd W. AND he saw that Birmingham gig and says she was great!

You read all those reports that Amy W – our favourite waste of space – got boo-ed off-stage during her Birmingham show (honey, if you’re going to get boo-ed off, that’s the place to do it!) and that it was all an icky mess…?

Well, the first lady of British Musical Theatre, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, begs to differ…

He was there with Sir David Frost (she’s got some diverse fans, this one) and he reckons she was great and he didn’t understand where the boo-ing came from. ‘I thought there were moments when she was absolutely magnificent,’ says his Lordship, citing flashes of Ella Fitzgerald brilliance.

‘I thought her voice was toned and she was handling material you would not expect a girl her age to cope with. It was strange what happened. Suddenly, way into the show, the audience turned on her and she wasn’t equipped to handle it.

‘That girl is a major, major talent,’ he went on (and he should know: he discovered Elaine Paige!) ‘I’d say there’s an Edith Piaf quality to her which is very rare.’

Unfortunately, Edith Piaf died in her 40s, looking about 87, from a life of mis-using drugs and generally being a bit of a fuck-up so maybe it wasn’t the best parallel to draw…

  1. They are all just going to bate her now. No one will be happy to go to an Amy show without something disastrous happening. She’s made her dirty bed, mind, now she’ll have to sing in it.

  2. I don’t know about anyone else, but I applaud Amy Winehouse, for putting on a shambolic performance and calling her ticket buying fans who got her where she is Monkey Cunts. What not to love?
