The Oscars are in! Keira is out! How rude!

Where's my farking nomination?

The Oscar nominations are in – and KK, fabulous in Atonement (as in real life!) ain’t amongst them! We demand a recount! We’re sure Shirley McLaine and Liza hadn’t finished filling in their forms yet.

The only consolation is that Viggo Mortensen, whose arse did sterling work in the very excellent indeed Eastern Promises is up. For a nom.

ACTOR IN NOT QUITE SO LEADING A ROLE
Casey Affleck – The Assassination of Jesse James…
Javier Bardem – No Country For Old Men*
Hal Holbrook – Into the Wild

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Cate Blanchett – Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie – Away From Her
Marion Cotillard – La Vie en Rose*
Laura Linney – The Savages
Ellen Page – Juno
WHAT? NO… Keira in Atonement?

ACTRESS IN A BIG ROLE BUT NOT QUITE BIG ENOUGH. SORRY.
Cate Blanchett – I’m Not There

  2. Love Keira but she weren’t nuffing special in Atonement. The accent was good but there wasn’t much call for an Oscar performance. For that you need to be able to chew the scenery liket he Vie en Rose bird.

  3. Atonement was over-rated, dears–a sort of give-me-an-oscar movie where the producers just piled on everything the AMPASites moisten their panties over: English country houses, period costumes, accents please, pretty ladies, the-horror-of-war-on-a-grand-scale-down-by-the-beach, a literary pedigree and, oh yes, a story with a lot of unrealized emotional potential killed dead by utterly cold characters. Sorries.

  4. atonement is great filmmaking. the fact that it is a period drama is incidental. it is not even a typical hollywood stuff. hope it wins. and i just came in from seeing Sweeney Todd – jeez… HBC deserves a nomination more than JD does, in their respective categories of course.
Oh and I saw No Country last week – JB is ok, but nothing special. I hope he doesn’t win. Unless if they want to give him something for not giving him an Oscar for his role in The Sea Inside a few years back.

  5. “Great filmmaking”? Hm…didn’t notice that, what with all the failure to make me care about the central characters or believe their Undying Love based solely on a quickie in the library. Need more’n that, I’m afraid. Music was nice, especially since the whole typewriter tippytappy bit could easily have been majorly stupid and was, rather, more effective. The young girl was good; could’ve used more of her. Overall seemed pretty much “done” already, tho: last year’s Very Long Engagement did it far better.

But yeh–HBC is great in Sweeney–acts her way brilliantly through songs she’s got too small a voice for, but that doesn’t matter cuz she Acts so utterly BRILLIANTLY. I thought JB was pretty darned creepy in No Country, but yeh also: didn’t scare me totally. I still think Paul Dano (There Will Be Stuff) and Michael Cera (Preggerschick) were robbed!!
