Having got rid of Concorde (OK, it was noisy and smelly but so is Lulu and no one’s getting rid of her!), very clever people in overalls have come up with this futuristic old thing.
It’s called the A2 (yes, like a very large piece of paper), is part of a project called Lapcat (Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies) and it can go at five times the speed of sound – or Mach 5, if that doesn’t make you think of a razor blade. And that’s twice as fast as your average Concorde.
Other things you may be interested to learn about this amazing bit of techno wizardry are…
It’s about half the length of the Titanic (which is pretty big and entitles it to its own Celine Dion song).
It’s powered by liquid hydrogen, which will make your carbon tootsie-print that much lighter.
It’s designed by Brits (hooray *national anthem plays, everyone stands in silence*)
It will fly out into the Atlantic pretty slowly then whizz off over the North Pole and down the other side.
It’s not been made yet but if it happens you will be able to go on a mini-break to Sydney for around 2,000 human pounds.
