What happened when a fortysomething writer met a 16-year-old on a beach?

Aw

The fortysomething writer was Christopher Isherwood – he of Cabaret fame. The 16-year-old was Don Bachardy, a 16-year-old. Boy. Of 16.

The couple fell in love and it became one of the big gay romances of the 20th century, with Christopher taking Don to all these Hollywood parties where arsehole actors would be rude to them, to literary parties with the likings of Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams, to north Africa to take drugs. You know the kind of thing. You’ve been 16.

It was a great story and that great story has now been made into a documentary called Chris and Don: A Love Story. You can see the trailer after the jump…

  1. See, this is what I was hoping my PE teacher Mr. Davis was going to do with me.
