The day they vote in their first black president is also the day they deny gay people the same rights as straights. Great democracy, much?

Sorry, kids. Apparently you don't deserve nice things like straight people...

California has voted in Proposition 8.

:-(

So while the whole of America is self-congratulating, heralding the dawn of a Brave New World, and announcing themselves as the ‘greatest democracy on earth’, the exact same country has decided that gay people do not deserve the same rights as straight people.

And before anyone gets all pedantic on our back bottoms, we know it’s California and not the whole of the US and A, but if anything that’s even more of a bummer (best excuse that pun before California gets all tetchy)  – bearing in mind this is liberal, left-wing California and not Texas we’re talking about.

And before anyone gets all pedantic on our back bottoms x2, we know being given the vote on this issue is all terribly democratic but sometimes, just sometimes, the stupid people really shouldn’t be given the vote. It’s why clever people (usually) are in charge.

Head? Hang it in shame, etc.

ps. Florida and Arizona have also banned gay marriage. Who knew, boo, etc. Oh that rhymes.

  1. Yeah, thanks black Americans. While the gays were 100% behind a black Prez, you voted 70% against 30% to ban gay marriage, while the white vote was in favour. Nice to see those minorities stick together. Stoopid Christians.

  3. I know. I like how black America is heralding ‘democracy at last’, ‘minority finally overcomes’, etc and etc, yet ask them to do the same favour to another minority and they’re like, ‘Er, don’t think so, fuck off!’. Personally I am disgusted.

  6. I just find it weird how gays think black are going to automatically be in favor of gay rights just because they’re minorities. Well common sense will tell you that’s not going to be the case. It’s not with Latinos, Asians or anyone else for that matter. Gays still have a long, long way to go. We’ve only just become very visible. Anyone who thinks we’re going to leap right in and be widely accepted is absolutely foolish. After all, we did just elect the first black president yesterday in a country that has been around for hundreds of years. America is only just now transitioning to being a progressive nation. Up until now it’s been mostly conservative. And besides, compared to other minorities, the fight for gay civil rights has been rather half-hearted even by gays themselves. Some fight their hearts out, but many just whine. Like on this site.

  7. I’m not quite sure why some gays think they’re going to be carried to victory on their civil rights on the back of another minority groups triumph. It ain’t gonna happen. Black America and Gay America are not any more the same than White America and Gay America.
And to Bernard, even though blacks were not in favor of gay marriage, there’s no way in hell whites were either. If whites were then the ban wouldn’t have passed, because we all know blacks alone can’t dominate a vote like that. Can’t be done. It still had to be MOSTLY WHITES who voted Yes on Prop. 8. End of story.

  9. This is turning out to be just another illogical, hypocritical day for democracy in America — the usual then! You know as well as I do that the ‘Jesus people’ are the ones widely responsible for this — regardless of colour. “Dirty gays upset our sweet baby Jesus in the sky”, etc. FUCK ‘EM !!!

  10. Thank you, Dicky Bunny.
It was largely the religious right the funded the effort against gay marriage in California- and it’s not over, yet. I think there’s a real argument to be had on a constitutional basis that you can’t deny rights to some citizens, while granting them to others.
And, just so it’s said: here in America, if you are a white gay male, you are accorded the same legal/ social courtesies/rights as a white straight male.
If you are a black, asian, latino straight/gay woman, you have less. You are the Bottom of the barrel.

  11. And BTW- Barak Obama is the first president to EVER mention gays and lesbians in his acceptance speech.
    It’s a big deal.
No, we cant’ solve it all in a day, and I’m ad as hell at California voter ignorance. But.
One step at a time. I’d like to keep Obama in the Oval Office alive long enough to do some good.

  12. But wasn’t Obama against prop. 8? Even though he, personally, is against gay marriage, I thought he wanted people to decide for themselves and not force his beliefs upon everyone. But just give it time. It’ll be back next year, and by then a lot of the old people who voted against it will have died, and a lot of the young people for it will be old enough to vote.

  13. If we just asked to have “unions” , “partnerships” and the like recognized the same as a hetero marriage….then it would have passed. Ask Barack Obama….that is his take on it and I think America would support it too. Leave “marriage” for the straights and the churches. Let’s have our own “Civil Unions” with the same benefits.

  14. trixy thing is that although me and my thus-far-fictional-fella-but-we’ll-skip-past-that-ta-very-much would go for the union/pard’nership option, there are some who like both Christ and bum and so would like to put on the frock and get themselves actually married. (Why they would is beyond me, i blame the sculptors of yore who depicted what a fine figure of a six-pack the BabyJee would one day develop ‘neath his loin cloth) There’s a mighty fine reason they stoppped demarking one bus for the blacks and one for the whites.

  15. FYI CJeffT, according to the Los Angeles Times the vote was split 46/54 (46 against gay marriage) among whites and 70/30 among blacks. Not my figures, but big grown up figures from people who know.

  16. And LadyMsSaint, how can you say you are granted the same legal rights as a white gay male? YOU CANNOT MARRY YOUR PARTNER. That’s a difference, isn’t it? No inheritance rights, no adoption rights, no right to sit with your dying partner in a hospital, while Britney Spears can get married while drunk in Las Vegas. Are those the same right? Ethnic minorities have the same rights in the eyes of the law, it’s social prejudice that has held them back.

  18. And FYI Jack… the guys behind this site work very closely with Stonewall on many of their campaigns. Stonewall, if you’re not aware, is the UK’s most important and powerful gay rights lobby.
And also FYI Jack… this ‘whining’ of which you speak – surely it’s better to ‘whine’ that sit back and not mention it at all? I’d rather someone ‘whine’, that not mention the hypocrisy of it all in any way shape or form. It’s sites like this that do much, much more than people like you, Jack, to raise awareness of the work that is yet to be done for gay rights.
Frankly, it’s people like you Jack who make me fear for the progression of gay rights, because every time anything’s mentioned it’s seen as ‘whining’. You sound like the people who ‘don’t mind gays, they just don’t want it shoved down their faces’.
    Depressing indeed.

  23. Lets face it, ‘democratic’ America is as homophobic as it is stupid! I’d rather sit at the back of the bus than share a seat next to bigot if need be! But lets not forget those that did vote in our favour. Democracy is paradoxically flawed as it will always oppress a minority. So what is ‘free’ about a minority being dictacted to by a majority? Democracy is a tired ideal!
