Can we have a tear for a moment. Just the one will do.

*punches heart*

We choked up over our morning Weetabix with hot milk and two sugars (it’s a Monday. We reduce the sugar as the week progresses, thereby dropping a dress size just in time for the weekend. Not that we’re the type of people who live for the weekend. How Bridge and Tunnel would that be?) when we watched Dustin Lance Black’s acceptance speech for Best Original Screenplay for Milk. The same Dustin, incidentally, we interviewed only last week for one of Her Majesty’s revered publications (very nice, by the way. Very).

And then we bawled like child-ren when Sean Penn said the following during his acceptance speach for Best Actor:

‘I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.’

And here’s the vid. You may feel a moistening around the eye area.

  2. Sean Penn is on my guilty pleasures list. The man has been inside Madonna for crying out loud. That’s good enough for me.

  3. Both were good speeches and at least two of the montage bits included gay kisses (from Milk and from past films). I found it all very inclusive (as opposed to finding it “very gay”). I did, however, imagine that some radical Christian was out there ticking down every little gay mention or occurrence! And I giggled … ‘cos you *know* I’m right about that. There will be a reactionary online movement and a conference to raise money for the ways of the sweet baby jesus (ie, fund social terrorism against the gays and line the pockets of some televangelist).

  4. Lance has said that Harvey’s story saved his life. Whether he contemplated suicide or other self-destruction, I am grateful that Harvey’s legacy touched and preserved him. I’m also grateful to his mom. Lance is such a prize in many ways, handsome, talented, humble; but his eloquence and golden heart are stunning. Thanks Lance.
