While Catholic Ireland is often portrayed as some sort of rural paradise, a cute and cuddly country where everyone is happily quaffing black velvet while lambs gambol and someone makes a farl, a new report into child abuse in workhouses, orphanages, reformatories and other church-run institutions paints quite a different picture.
Yes, indeed. Because while most of Europe was enjoying all the trappings of modern life: sex outside marriage, divorce, abortion when necessary and maybe even some boy-on-boy action, the Catholic Church had Ireland held in the grip of the Dark Ages.
No divorce, no abortion, no homosexuality and, worse still, a system where children, for crimes as serious as truancy or being the child of an unmarried mother, were delivered unto the same religious types that have fought tooth and nail against any sort of gay rights where they were abused, physically, sexually and emotionally. And had no one to complain to, since the goverment was turning a very blind eye to what was going on. Nice people.
And now comes the day of reckoning. After nine longs years of putting every last wardrobe in front of the door in the form of lawsuits, disappeared documents and even government obstruction, it’s time to hear what these moral guardians have been up to. Oh, and they’ve been nicking state money. Read all about it here.
