Reasons not to visit Jamaica #16365472

BoycottMmm… Sunny Jamaica. A joyous place with a capital city boasting the highest murder rate in the world and a, how do we put this, somewhat less than tolerant attitude towards those of the homo persuasion. Not only can any gayer or someone suspected of being a gayer expect to be physically and verbally abused, the ‘abominable crime of buggery’ can carry a ten year jail sentence here, people.

But why the vitriol now? It could be to do with the fact we couldn’t finish our luncheon (Superfood Salad FYI. Health, health, health) having read about murdered British diplomat John Terry, whose body was found today next to a note to ‘batty man’ which read, ‘This is what will happen to ALL gays’. Huzzah! Finally, a holiday destination with hate crimes, prison and shit music rolled into one. What’s not to like?

Pissed that we’re reinforcing negative stereotypes of an entire country? Annoyed that we’re dissing reggae music? Or just plain old miffed that this piece failed to include male nudity in any shape or form? Get things off your chest over the jump.

  1. Here here, or is it hear hear? Whatever. I would never go there. Call me crazy but I’ve just never fancied being brutally beaten – or worse – whilst on me hollidays.

  2. Spot on. Going there would be just condoning their abhorrent behaviour towards anybody and everybody with a whiff of the gay about them.

  3. I wouldn’t be caught dead drinking rum, let alone going to the Homophobe Capital of the World.

  4. What year is this? How is this still acceptable? Why do people still flock there regardless of their policies – or lack thereof – and retarded attitudes? Makes me vom.

  5. I grew up partially in Montego Bay. I don’t remember hearing anything much in particular about gays then (in the 80s). Granted, Mo’Bay *seems* to be the most socially progressive place on the island — and has the most ‘out’ gays nowadays. Jamaica has always had a twisted take on religion & god — there are very blurred lines between Christianity, voodoo, Rastafarianism, some disconnected African beliefs that are just ‘traditional’ & that no one can explain and plain old hate. It *does* seem to be the case that homophobia is the ignorance of choice and it is RAMPANT. It’s been violent since the early 90s. I’ve never quite been able to reconcile dancing nearly naked, quaking one’s arse and jiggling one’s vulva publicly at length with the Jesus. It is a mystery. But the gays? Now *they’re* naughty. To which I say: BITCH, PLEASE!
