So, it finally happened: Babs live on stage at the itsy bitsy Vanguard in the West Village (a neighbourhood – or ‘area’ – of London’s glittering New York) where she played her first gig four hundred years ago to celebrate the Indians selling Manhattan to people from Rotterdam for a necklace made out of fizzy sweets and the shiny bit off-of a Kit Kat.
This Saturday Manhattan was abuzz with the gig, which was shared by competition winners who had been strip searched and had fingers inserted into their cavities – anal and vaginal – to make sure they weren’t secretly taping the event, and the likes of the Clinton family (not the card shop, the former Prez, who presumably didn’t have his cavities searched. Then again…), Mr. Barbra Streisland James Brolin, seen here cosying up to close BS friend Donna Karen (pronounced Karen, not Ka-RAN), Nicole Kidman, le tout Manhattan.
Elsewhere crowds of specially invited gays and non-gays had gathered informally to watch the concert beamed live via technology: a total of 12 songs from the new Diana Krall-produced album Love is the Answer as well as greatest hits like ‘Evergreen’ and ‘The Way We Were’.
Those lucky enough to have attended or viewed the do at a distance left emotionally drained, culturally topped-up and ready to bang on about it for the rest of their lives.
