Wondering what to wear down the Trafalgar Square Candlelit Vigil (or The Vidge) on Friday? How’s about this?

Wear it with pride

We know that with a Candlelit Vigil it’s not all about how you look and what you’re wearing it’s just that – newsflash! – it’s ALWAYS about how you look and what you’re wearing.

‘Sides, just because you’re looking foxier than Basil Brush and hotter than your average tamale doesn’t mean you can’t be protesting the shit out of that stuff (sorry, we watched Clueless the other day, and it’s repeating on us).

Anyways, and we don’t even know if you’ll be able to get your feverish mitts on them in time, American Apparel, big supporters of the whole gay thing, have created a couple of T-shirts that fit the event down to a T. Shirt.

One is this, erm, one of two gay gents walking right down Santa Monica Boulevard in London’s glittering West Hollywood during the gay parade in 1984, the other is, even more appropriately, from an anti-homophobia rally outside the Anaheim Hotel in 1989. Check them out here and tell us that ain’t a thing of beauty.

Oh, and top tip for The Vidge: hip flasks with flavoured vodka!

  1. Is it appropriate to be treating this like any other night out? I think it probably is but I thought I’d ask.

  2. Will these be sold at the Pre-Vigil party at Kudos?

  3. What a tasteless and utterly stupid post. It’s a vigil for God sake! And you think it’s cool to trivilase it with a shallow, ‘what to wear’ fashion post. This post sums up this site perfectly. Crass.

  4. I agree Paul. The shallowness oif this site and the writing defeats me. This post typifies everything that is wrong with the gay scene.

  5. Bloody hell Paul and Stuart, you’re the reason a lot of people don’t go to things like this. They think they’re going to be full of po-faced, stick-up-the-arse wankers. Just because it’s a serious event doesn’t mean we all have to change our personalities. Surely that’s what the homophobes want. Even the Stonewall rioters called themselves Pink Panthers.

  6. Erm, Paul and Stuart… just take a proper look at this site, will you. It is vehemently anti-homophobic and really quite militant, in that is pulls up the cunts of this world in a humourous and non-ascetic manner, and has been hugely supportive of this vigil from the get go. Humour does not trivialise things, merely makes a lot of topics more palatable for a lot of people and enables them to reach a wider audience. It’s politics and polemic are, much harder hitting than a lot of the shit you find acceptable, I imagine…
I – along with my fellow me-me-me-ers – am taking this vigil incredibly seriously – but I’m still fretting over what to wear. There’s gonna be 10,000 gays, for Christ’s sake!

  7. ps. Did you like how serious I got there? I’ve not used the word ‘ascetic’ since my uni days. *gets misty eyed*

  8. Stuart’s put the words in his own mouth. ‘The writing defeats me’.
Only an idiot would think this site doesn’t take homophobia incredibly seriously – it’s a damn site more political than the likes of Pink News………..

  11. Precisely, boys. My friend – a gay – really didn’t want to come to The Vidge until I showed him this… now he’s coming! Know your demographic, says I.

  12. This post is so sickeningly senseless and just as Paul and Stuart said – totally crass and shallow. It’s writing like this the gay scene should be ashamed of. This would appeal to GAY teens who’ve never read a book, which is probably who it’s aimed at. I feel embarrassed for the author. Who needs Jan Moir when we have idiots liike this trivialsing someone’s death and bringing it back to ‘Oh what shall I wear?’ I’ll never come back here again.

  14. And FYI Karen and equally numpty chums….. i know for a fact (I won’t reveal my sources. Only for money) that one of the writers of this blog is helping organise tonight’s vigil, and they’ve been hugely supportive of The Vidge since day one. So, Newsflash! Humour doesn’t make you bad person. You only have to take a look at pretty much every other story on here to know how supportive of gay rights it is. And frankly it’s sickening you’ve compared this site with Jan Moir. If that’s the level of your intelligence, then this really isn’t the place for you.

  15. To all the people getting upset, don’t you take time out to decide what you’re wearing to a funeral? I do. Does iit make me a bad person to want to look nice when sending off a loved one? The fact of the matter is over 10,000 people are expected at the vigil tonight and it made main BBC news this morning. That’s the point. So what if people want to get a bit dressed up to mark the occassion?

  16. This is such a childish pointless post. Can’t the writer see that? A lot of people on Facebook are saying the same thing. It’s writing like this that ADDS to homophobia as it plays up to a stereotype of us all being fashion obsessed queens even when we’re meant to be uniting against a gay murder. You should be ashamed of yourselves. No doubt the writer will retaliate with made up names – as it is obvious that was what he was doing above. And I agrre with Karen – I’d class this in Jan Moir type of journalism. Cheap and nasty.

  19. Peseta, everything Darren, Karen, Stuart and Paul are saying is absolutely right. No one is saying Karen owns the gay scene – but if you are going to post very shallow and insensitive blogs (even more shallow than your others, which is no mean feat) then you have to expect comment back. My opinion is tht this is a site that should be completly avoided – and I will be telling everyone on Facebook the same thing. It’s worse than Boyz magazine which takes some beating – so well done on that score.

  20. What I think Peseta is saying people is that there is more than one way to skin a cat. A lot of people are turned off by clenched-fist politics. If me-me-me can get those people to feel included in the vigil, I can’t see why that’s a bad thing. Just sayin’

  21. Oh, and I think the Jan Moir comment is just silly. You only have to look at their piece on… Jan Moir. In fact, daft as it may be, I can’t quite think of a more radical gay site than this. No pussyfooting around about calling the Pope a cunt… it’s more than most sites would dare do.

  22. Darren says ‘It’s writing like this that ADDS to homophobia as it plays up to a stereotype of us all being fashion obsessed queens’ – seems to me, the minute we start changing to fit in with someone else’s idea of what a gay man should be is the minute the homophobes have won. I thank you.
