Do you ‘member the atheist buses? The ones that said that there’s probably no God so how about relaxing and enjoying life? The ones that got religious folks frothing at the mouth and other orifices?
Well, the good people who launched that campaign are spending the last of their campaigning pocket money (apparently a lot of people contributed!) on this new poster which is basically asking religious folks to keep their dirty ideas off of children until they are old enough to decide for themselves.
Now, there are many reasons this campaign – which we love – won’t work.
1). Who, other than a small child, who frankly doesn’t know jack would believe this nonsense? If you can’t get them when they still think fairies are leaving money under their pillows, then you’ll never get them.
b). This will send the men in black dresses (so slimming!) into an overdrive of brainwashing activity.
III). Faith schools.
But we do like Richard Dawkins’, he of The God Delusion (though we personally prefer Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great, which is much ruder and funnier) statement backing the campaign: ‘Nobody would seriously describe a tiny child as a ‘Marxist child’ or an ‘Anarchist child’, sayeth he (though we have known some real anarchists among the child fraternity, it must be said), ‘yet children are routinely labelled with the religion of their parents.’
You can’t argue with that. Though we can think of some people who will. Some of them wearing dolly little red slippers and gaudy hats.
