Is it just us, or did the cutaway to openly lesbian actress Jane Lynch during Jodie Foster’s Golden Globes speech make her seem like a cowardly, money-grubbing cunt?

Oh, it’s easy to love Jodie Foster. The cheekbones, the manly gait, the take-no-prisoners attitude. And she’s been in some good films. Panic Room, there’s one. There are others, don’t test us.

But when she gets up to give a big Golden Globes speech for a lifetime achievement award and jokes about coming out, saying that her sexuality is nobody’s business because it’s her private life, then we are going to start having problems with Miss Jodie Foster.

No, media pundits and sobbing film stars in the room, this was not a brave thing to do. The brave thing to do was what Jane Lynch and Sir Ian McKellen have done: not make a fucking big deal of it like it’s something to be ashamed of. To put your life first and your career second (would she really have weathered this long as an A-lister if she had come out?)

This, ladies and germs, was a cowardly thing to do. Being ‘discreet’ about your sexuality is not about privacy and human dignity – no one is asking whether you’re a top or a bottom – it’s about denial and keeping your eye on the dollar. The only reason she hasn’t come out in public and provided a much-needed role model for ordinary, non-celebrity teenagers struggling in the hell-holes of their homophobic neighbourhoods – though she hinted she had come out to everyone else – is that she wanted the money, the money not available to openly gay Hollywood stars. Don’t pretend it’s some high-minded last stand against intrusion, honey. You have your eye on the cash. And it’s such a large amount of cash, more cash per movie than most of us will earn in a lifetime of hard, proper work, that maybe you can’t blame her.

Just don’t expect us to dab our eyes and say what a brave and dignified thing it is to do. We just hope Jane Lynch went over and gave her a sharp slap to those sharp cheekbones.

But don’t take our word for it. See it yourself.

  1. Point well made. When they cut to Jane Lynch it’s like, what is she saying that because she’s honest about her sexuality she’s Honey Boo Boo?

  2. So are Brad Pitt and Angelina being reality stars because they’re openly in a relationship? Such hypocricy. And everyone fell for it!

  3. I love how she couldn’t even bring herself to say the word ‘lesbian’, like it was a dirty word. Yey, such a gay hero! Silly cow.
