Yes, soul lovers, the fierce ruling diva of r’n’b has gone the whole hog and come up with her very own Christmas album called A Mary Christmas, which plays on the homophony between the words ‘Mary’, her name, and ‘Merry’. And yet she’s almost entirely unschooled!
On A Mary Christmas Miss J. Blige has found fit to do her own versions of Christmas classics such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Little Drummer Boy (didn’t the Moors Murderers kill a child to this one?) and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire aka The Christmas Song. And why not? Fierce ruling divas of r’n’b need money too.
And there are duets! Barbra Streisland on When You Wish Upon a Star, Marc Anthony (ex-off-of Jennifer Lopez) on Noche De Paz, which is the Spanish name for Silent Night (the twists on this album are secondary to none, let us tell you!) and Jessie J (Mary J ‘n’ Jessie J) on Do You Hear What I Hear? Unfortunately, we do: lots of notes broken up into tiny little pieces until Barbra comes on to show that, when you sing, you can actually hold that note until you’ve finished with it and moved onto the next one.
The Mary J Blige Christmas album - complete with Barbra Streisand duet - has happened. It cannot un-happen.,
