This footballer has come out as gay. And not even a designer-imposter gay.

Thomas Hitzlsperger – who our female colleagues tell us used to play for Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham, which isn’t even a ham! – has come out as gay. Without even adding ‘of course I still fancy girls’ at the end!

‘In England, Italy and Germany being a homosexual is no big thing, at least not in the dressing room,’ says Thomas, as thoughts turn to dressing rooms in England, Italy and Germany.

‘I was never ashamed of being who I am but it was not always easy to sit on a table with 20 young men and listen to jokes about gays. You let them get on with it as long as the jokes are somewhat funny and not too insulting,’ he tells German paper Die Ziet.

‘Being gay is a topic that is ignored in football and not a serious topic in the changing room. Fighting spirit, passion and winning mentality are intrinsically linked, that doesn’t fit the cliché: “gays are soft”‘.

  1. Yes, well, good for him and all that, but let’s remember that this is an EX-football player who gave up in September and never said a word when he was actually playing football … and was, in fact, normally pictured kissing and cuddling his very female partner in most publicity shots. Great he’s out; shame he didn’t do it 15 years ago.

  2. I can completely understand why current footballers don’t come out – it must be daunting to contemplate going onto a playing field in front of several thousand (if not several tens of thousands of) possibly unsupportive football fans. I do think the upside of coming out whilst playing could be that any player playing for a lesser-known team could catapult their profile and PR potential through coming out. One could see someone brave enough to do that earning some decent off-field cashola as a result, Nike-sponsored athlete, gay-targeted cologne brand-advertising person etc. Just a thought.
